    Gong Movie Storyline & Plot

Gong is a seven-day study tour of five students from the performing arts field at UiTM to Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The start of a learning and cultural trip quickly turns into an uncomfortable one as the group visits a museum with historical artefacts, art works and traditional music instruments. One of the exhibits catches their attention, an ancient gong. At first, the mysterious artifact seems like just another object, but it soon becomes the focus of sinister events. As the students begin to learn more about the gong, they slowly start to get afraid of what it could be doing.

When Trisha is intrigued by the unusual object, she sneaks the gong out of the museum, things take a dangerous turn. The students are left in conflict with each other over the decision, but soon become involved in the puzzle surrounding it. Once the gong arrives in their environment, then strange things start to happen and they become haunted by an unknown, supernatural entity. The group’s efforts to make sense of what is going on in the vicinity seem as much an effort to discover the link between the ancient artifact and the terrifying thing that appears to have been awakened.

As the supernatural forces ramp up, the students’ study tour becomes a terrifying struggle for survival. Their friendship, bravery and mutual trust are put to the test as they attempt to get away from the repercussions of their deeds. The enigma of the gong grows increasingly significant as the characters are challenged to deal with the supernatural power linked to the gong. Gong explores the themes of horror, mystery, suspense and culture through the juxtaposition of these elements, creating a haunting supernatural tour out of a typical student adventure, where curiosity comes at a high cost: fear.

Gong Movie Budget & Box Office Collection

The production budget of Gong (2006) is not clearly marked in the major publicly available film sources. But, the movie’s estimated budget is said to be around RM2 million according to Gamepack. It is not certain this is the official figure, so the RM2 million is a reported budget, not a confirmed official. It was made by Grand Brilliance and directed by Sandosh Kesavan, and the story revolves around 5 students from performing-arts course at UiTM who went on a study tour to Yogyakarta, but then when they arrived there, they get involved with an unknown ancient gong. Box-office-wise, a modern day listing of the Malaysian film industry says that Gong grossed about RM650,000 at the local box office. The same source puts the film in the Malaysian list of 2006 movies, and quotes Grand Brilliance as their production company.

    Final Thoughts

Gong is a Malaysian horror-mystery movie that makes a seemingly innocuous study tour into a nightmare. The horror story of the film is directed by Sandosh Kesavan and led by Fasha Sandha, Elyana, Faizal Yusuf and Sharifah Sofia, with the help of a gong, a mysterious entity and a group of young students. Box-office data collection of modern style is challenging to verify in detail. There are no reliable figures for daily or worldwide. A historical Malaysian source reports RM650,000. Although not much commercial information is available in the present, Gong is still an interesting entry in Malaysian horror cinema due to its supernatural theme and the mysterious tale of a cursed artifact, in addition to its cultural setting.
